It’s no secret that social media has downsides. Although certain marketing campaigns declare that these websites provide a sense of belonging and inform you with what’s going on in your community, they may be overlooking the effects social media has on your self esteem. They are not wrong though, there are definitely some beneficial purposes. But if you let yourself be all consumed by social media, you may find yourself with an increased risk of anxiety and depression. Here’s why: Social media’s intended audience is focused toward adolescence. This is the time during a persons’ life in which they may start to feel insecure about themselves and resort to trying to fit in with the crowd and be “cool”. In order to achieve this impossible level of acceptance, their lives should be fun, their personality carefree, and have perfect bodies. When young adults see pictures and stories of someone else who appears to have the ideal life, they compare themselves to these people. Whether or not this action is consciously made, it can make teens feel insignificant and boring. However, a lot of stuff on the internet is filled with lies. Photos can be photoshopped and transformed into a false image. Certain individuals can be deceiving with lies too, bending the truth and making an inaccurate story. If your life is not as flawless as these façades, you feel worse about yourself. In fact, 60% of people using social media reported that it has negatively impacted their self-esteem. And these are just the people who have admitted it. There may be a bigger percentage. There is also another way that teenagers can feel bad about themselves after visiting social media. In certain apps, such as YouTube or Instagram, users can upload videos of themselves. After doing so, the following action is, naturally, to hope for likes and subscribers. If viewers responded negatively to that one video, like disliking or posting unkind comments, then the creator of that video will of course feel worse about themselves. As you can see, social media is not all that great for your self-respect. Even though there are a lot of youth who use social media to chat with friends and feel connected to their society, it may not be all that it claims to be. Fake news seems to be everywhere nowadays. From sites claiming to tell the future to scams that pretend to be celebrity endorsed. False information isn’t new to any of us, but with the historical events of 2020, and the speed that data can travel, it has many consequences. Coronavirus has been one of the most followed topics in 2020. It has been crucial to know about every new guideline put in place and how it could affect us. Covid-19 articles and social media posts are circulated fast, but are not always right. Many sites advertise to be selling protective equipment like disinfecting wipes, gloves, and masks. This is purely clickbait and causes those in need to waste money and get their information stolen. Everyday, people are tricked into using untrusted apps and sites that display the number of coronavirus cases. The count is almost always exaggerated by adding unconfirmed cases or understated to please those who view the tracker. Many families look for preventive and precautionary actions they could take to protect themselves against Covid, but false advertising that a doctor advises something can be very misleading. People don't know whether certain common places are safe to visit or not, or when the real economy reopening dates are. A recent study shows that 86% of internet users admit being duped by false claims, most of them circulating on Facebook. People tend to share articles that appear to convey important information to increase their follower count, rather than reading the article and validating its factuality. The recent protests over a variety of things have also been a news obsession. Certain upsetting videos have been targeted towards the population that will be worried, eventually sparking public outrage in many communities. New tools and apps that help people report incidents of all kinds are being misused, so those who check them frequently will never know the correct count. Media and news live streams tend to overcomplicate certain political disputes with the public, to make them seem more interesting, not taking into account the illegitimate claims that are being spread. And on top of all that, crowdfunding dupes large groups of people into donating money, thinking it will help support whatever cause it advertises to. Overall, fake news is messing with our sense of what truth is. We must always be on the lookout for things on the internet that seem too good to be true, but must accept that our perspectives in 2020 have been warped by fake news.
